The Velvet Rose Princess

A princess named Elara once lived in a castle hidden behind endless rose gardens. They say she was perfect. Beautiful. Kind. Destined to become queen. But she never did. Three nights before her coronation… She vanished. No answers. Just an empty throne. And a kingdom that refused to speak her name again. I first saw her image when I was sixteen. It was floating around online. A dark-haired princess on a balcony surrounded by roses. But it wasn’t her face that scared me. It was the quote underneath:
“Her story was written in roses and sealed with ambition.”
Her name was listed as: Princess Elara, but when I searched her… There was nothing. No records. No kingdom. Like she had been erased.
Then at 3:13 AM, I got a message.
Unknown account. No name. No profile picture. Just an image. Her.
And a single line: “Find the castle before the roses bloom.”
Then the account disappeared. Most people would’ve ignored it. I didn’t. I started searching. Weeks turned into months. Until I found a post about an abandoned castle deep in the woods. The photo attached made my stomach drop. The towers matched her image. Exactly. A week later, I went there. The forest was dead silent. And the air… Smelled like roses. Even though there were none. When I stepped inside the castle… the first thing I noticed was the silence. Not empty silence. The kind that feels like something is listening back. The air was warm… too warm for a place that was supposed to be abandoned. And the walls… They weren’t cold stone. They were alive. I know how that sounds—but I could feel it. Like something inside the castle was breathing through them. I reached out and pressed my hand against one of the walls. It gave way slightly.
Just enough to make me pull back. And that’s when it happened. A folded piece of paper pushed itself out from the stone. Then another. Then another. Like the castle had been holding letters inside of itself for years… just waiting for someone to touch it. I picked one up. It was old. Fragile.
Written in ink that looked almost faded… but still fresh at the same time.
It said: “If you are reading this… she already chose you.”
My stomach dropped. Because there was no name. No signature. Just that. And suddenly… the walls weren’t quiet anymore. They were moving. More letters started pushing out around me, faster now, like the castle was trying to get everything out at once. And the final one… fell right at my feet.
It read: “Don’t go to the garden.” Of course… that was exactly where the hallway was leading me. The deeper I walked into the castle, the more it changed. The hallway felt longer than it should’ve been. My footsteps started echoing before I made them. Like the castle already knew where I was going. At the end of the corridor… there was a door. Covered in carvings of roses. It opened on its own. And I stepped into the garden. Except… It wasn’t a garden. It was a spiral. Roses twisted into patterns that didn’t look natural… like they were drawn by something that didn’t understand how plants were supposed to grow. The path curved in circles instead of lines. And the moment I stepped forward— I felt it. Time didn’t move right here. My phone froze instantly. 3:13 AM. Still. Always. With every step I took deeper into the spiral, something changed. My shoes felt heavier… like they were aging. My reflection in the glass windows of the castle flickered behind me, like it couldn’t keep up. And my heartbeat… started echoing a second too early. Like something was predicting me. Then I saw it. At the very center of the spiral garden. A single rose bush. But it was glowing. Not softly… but like it was lit from inside. And in the middle of it— Something was buried in the petals. A key. Bone and gold. Hanging there like it had been waiting. And then— A voice. Not loud. Not clear. Just close enough to feel inside my head: “She used this to leave once.” I froze. Because I didn’t know who “she” was anymore. Elara… or whoever was watching me now. The roses around me started shifting slightly. Not growing. Reacting. Like they were waiting for a decision. And that’s when I realized something that made my stomach drop even harder. This wasn’t just a place I had found. It was a place I had been guided to. Like every step I took…had already been written. I reached toward the glowing rose. And just before my fingers touched the key— Everything went silent. Completely silent. And from behind me… the castle doors slowly closed.
